Former TV and film star “humbled, thrilled”

(Los Angeles) – Amid a firestorm of criticism, Henderson NCAA Tournament Officials today defended their decision to retain the services of Mr. Charles Sheen-Estevez, aka Charlie Sheen, to a two-year contract as their chief spokesman.

“Mr. Sheen-Estevez has a strong following,” said Henderson NCAA Tournament President Matt Henderson.  “Without question, he appeals to our core demographic group, while demonstrating proven inroads to the largest growing segment of our playing population: senior citizens.”

Mr. Sheen wasted no time hitting the airwaves to promote the upcoming Tournament, including appearances on NBC’s The Today Show, TBS’s Conan and Harpo Production’s The Oprah Winfrey Show.  “The only one winning there are the Oreo cookies,” said the outspoken screen star.

Other near-celebrities weighed in on the matter. “I question his commitment. How do we know he will see this through?” said less than one term governor Sarah Palin.  Former Dancing with the Stars contestant Kate Gosselin used the opportunity to lash out at her ex-husband, while country music star Taylor Swift “thanked all those back home in Nashville who have always supported her”.

Despite the swift and mostly negative reaction to today’s announcement, Mr. Sheen-Estevez once again displayed his confidence and enthusiasm for his new role.  To his detractors, he had but two words: Bring It.
